OOIDA spearheaded affordable truck insurance
for small-business truckers

One of the group benefits that we at OOIDA are most proud of is the Association's truck insurance programs. The reason is that the development of these programs back in the mid-1970s were single handedly responsible for tearing down the obstacles to affordable truck insurance for owner-operators. The system, up until that time, resulted in the higher rates to owner-operators subsidizing the lower rates and higher claims experience of truck fleets.

Prior to OOIDA's involvement in the truck insurance market, most insurers wanted nothing to do with small-business truckers. These "gypsies", as owner-operators were referred to, were considered less desirable insurance risks. Those few insurers that did cover owner-operators only did so at exorbitant rates.

OOIDA's entry into the market changed all that. It provided the opportunity to establish a pool of owner-operators separate from the fleets with employee drivers in order to identify and evaluate their insurance claims experience and prove what we knew all along, namely that owner-operators like you were better risks than fleet business because of your hands-on involvement, your professionalism, care of equipment and concern for safety.

Today, because of our program's success, owner-operators and small-business truckers are widely recognized in the insurance industry as preferred risks with insurance companies aggressively competing for their business.

Truck insurance remains the most important benefit OOIDA offers owner-operators and we continue to refine and improve our insurance products and customer service capabilities. As with all OOIDA programs, revenues beyond the cost of delivering the service go directly back into the Association to support our on-going representation on your behalf.
